Fallout 76 Unveils Substantial Expansion With New Vegas References and Walton Goggins

This marks the sixty-fourth major expansion since its initial release, the multiplayer Fallout experience is gearing up to receive its largest expansion yet during the holiday season. Named the new expansion, this substantial update will bring new weapons, new missions, and guide players to the previously unexplored region of the Ohio wasteland.

An Impressive Journey

At one point, the notion of this online Fallout experience getting such a significant update seven years after launch would have seemed impossible. When the MMO initially debuted in 2018, it faced criticism from both critics and gamers who considered the early build problematic and half-baked. Some thought it would meet similar ends as similar online experiments of that era.

We've just continuously had faith in this game, explained the creative director. The debut was similar to the beginning of our narrative. Players come out and they initially find anybody there, and they explore their world. Our approach was simply keeping our heads down and persistently create the gameplay that we know our fans will enjoy, and that we would want to experience.

Venturing Into Unexplored Regions

The new content represents the most substantial content addition to date. The primary aspect is the territory addition, allowing players to travel beyond into the Ohio region and discover what developments have transpired there. Spoiler alert: Nothing good!

For the development team that entering a fresh territory after extended time in West Virginia presented an perfect chance to develop an untouched location within the Fallout universe.

We had not extensively covered Ohio in the game's history too much, explained the development lead. Starting from the existing territory, if you move east, you start approaching the Capital Wasteland. That area is quite familiar. Ohio remained developed too much. Accordingly, this installment being taking place first in the timeline provides us various storytelling options. Let's see what's occurring in this new region!

Drawing Inspiration from Fan Favorites

What immediately catches attention about the game's version of Ohio is that it's developed as a desert wasteland. This may look surprising given the real-world location of Ohio, but there's a deliberate rationale for this creative choice: The aesthetic was heavily inspired by Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Instead of exactly duplicating elements from previous titles, the development team focused on capturing the core feeling of those titles within this update.

It wasn't centered around studying those installments and declaring we need specific elements, clarified the creative director. What we aimed to accomplish was adopting the characteristic feel of those Fallout games and having that faithfully captured in this expansion. The direction I communicated to the developers when we began working on the new region was: It needs to feature dry regions, dangerous monsters, and plenty of enemies. From my perspective, that captures what the third installment and the Vegas title characterize. Those are the essential elements that define the characteristic feel of those games, and so I wanted that reflected here.

Streaming Adaptation Connection

The success of the live-action adaptation produced a significant rise in community activity for the online game, with accounts indicating a multiple times player growth. The studio understood they needed to leverage this circumstance, but didn't have the necessary time to create a full crossover immediately.

The method came through organic development when the developers discovered the perfect connection with Walton Goggins' character, who becomes a quest giving NPC within the recent update.

During development we determining what this new region would contain, what the general atmosphere would be, and then what the primary feature of the fresh territory would become, that's hunter quests, commented the creative director. What person better to host these missions than The Ghoul? Since he is a knowledgeable admirer of the franchise too, he was quite willing to work with us and make this happen. So it didn't start as from the onset, but it developed through organic development of the content.

Additional Content

This expansion won't be the final content addition for the multiplayer experience. The studio is already working on the first substantial future expansion and organizing additional content reaching as far as the seventy-second addition.

At one point a period where we couldn't imagine there would possibly exist an seventy-sixth expansion, commented the production director. Now we're at a phase where the situation is so successful, for both the show and the game. It's actually kind of amazing to think that there's an seventy-sixth expansion that might eventually sync up with, as you might imagine, future developments!
