Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track right in his path
The concerning event happened on the third rotation when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"During the third lap, marshals were informed and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"We are still investigating what occurred following that moment"
