Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Schools in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for armed groups

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The criminal group invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.

A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Community members informed journalists that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
