United Nations Lifts Restrictions on Syrian President Before White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council approved to an American proposal ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.

He became transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that drove out Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, concluding over a decade of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and allied countries for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

The pair met initially in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the Middle East.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
